The hills are alive with the sound of engines

After COVID-19 saw the postponement of the 2020 Millers Oils N.I Hill Climb Championship it was thought that there would be no action on the Northern Ireland hills this year.

However the hard work of Mid Antrim Motor Club saw them pull together to get their Garron Point Hill Climb up and running. The entries were flying in as everyone was excited to get back on the tar.

I had the best socially distanced marshal point just above mid point as the fast section of bends provided great action. With the sun shining and the second best view of the Irish Sea from a Hill Climb after our own Cairncastle (not biased) the event was set up for a fantastic day of Motorsport.

The two practice runs were complete by lunch although I think someone failed to tell Roger Gage and Oliver Cormican that they were practice runs lol.

The King of the Hill Graham Thompson set a blistering pace on his first timed run, two seconds faster than Alan Cassells in his new OMP turbo. The time looked as it would be hard to beat as it was just over half a second away from the Hill record.

The times exchanged in all the classes were great with lots of battles all round. Oliver Cormican showed great pace in his new VW Polo and Roger Gage was as always fully committed in his mini. Roger never seemed to lift through Mid Point and used every millimetre of the road.

The only incident was with Ivan McCullough who walked away from a heavy impact after his Nissan GTR clipped the stone wall resulting in the car rolling up the hill. Thankfully he was able to walk away from the accident and was quickly looked after by the medical crew whilst the damaged car was removed.

The drive of day for me was Ryan McGimpsey who pulled a fantastic drive out on his final run and almost pipped Graham to the top spot but a fantastic second overall never the less.

Congrats to Mid Antrim MC for an enjoyable day and thanks to all the Larne yins for helping out.
