The Ballycoose road welcomed Larne Motor Club as they hosted
rounds 5 & 6 of the Millers Oils N.I Hill Climb Championship.A slight drop in this years entry for both
Friday and Saturday didn’t deter the club from organising a great weekend of
Friday saw thirty-four drivers set out to complete the 1.65
mile course.With the first practice
under way, proceedings were temporarily halted after a competitor crashed just
metres from the finish line.Thankfully
he was ok although his Subaru was not so fortunate. The rain played its part during the first
timed run, which saw some unlikely names appearing in the top ten.The sunshine quickly dried up the surface and
back came the usual front runners.
Once again the king of Cairncastle Hill Climb, Graham
Thompson demonstrated his speed up the hill to take overall victory from
Richard McGimpsey with Seamus Morris in third place.
With the first day of competition completed the paddock
atmosphere peaked with those who camp overnight, getting the BBQs lit and the
banter flowing. There was even a strong
smell of bacon which came from the young marshal’s tents although getting a
piece from them seemed to be impossible.
As the Saturday morning awoke so did everyone else in the
club to get ready for day two.The
exciting battle came between Davy Francis, Conor Lavery, Ian Lancashire and
Ivan McCullough with only tenths of a second separating the four after the
second timed run.Experience came to the
fore as Davy found two seconds on his final run to move into the top ten and go
away with class 9 victory and bragging rights in the paddock as well as social
The only change in the top three from Friday was Seamus
passing Richard to take the runner up spot with Graham Thompson proving to be
unbeatable once again.A day without
incident saw the action completed by half three.
Larne MC would like to thank all the competitors, marshals
and services for helping to make the weekend a great success. We would also like to thank Laird Grass
Machinery, Oakland Insurance, AWP Fire, Carey Floorcare, McCartney Motors,
A&R Autoparts, Marty’s catering and MJ Tyres, for their continued support
of Larne Motor Club.
